Hospital morgue full? Options for California hospitals

For hospital decedent affairs, nursing and facilities managers · Last checked October 13, 2026

Short answer

When a hospital morgue is full, the cause is usually a few long holds, not many short ones. Find the decedents who wait for next of kin, a funeral home choice or a coroner decision. Move those long holds to a refrigerated storage partner, with a full custody record. Keep your own morgue positions for new cases.

What California requires of a hospital morgue

  • A hospital with 50 or more licensed beds must keep a well-ventilated morgue with autopsy facilities, unless adequate facilities are available in the local community.
  • A hospital with 100 or more licensed beds must keep a well-ventilated morgue with autopsy facilities.
  • When a hospital holds unembalmed remains, it must keep refrigerated compartments at 45°F (7°C) or colder.

Why hospital morgues fill up

  • Staff cannot find the next of kin.
  • The family needs time to choose a funeral home.
  • Relatives must travel from far away.
  • The coroner must decide whether to take the case.
  • A busy season brings more deaths than usual.

A small hospital can have only a few morgue positions. One decedent who waits three weeks can take a third of the capacity for that time.

Your options

  • Ask the family to choose a funeral home sooner, and give them a clear deadline in writing.
  • Ask your local funeral homes about transfer before the family decides. Many will not accept a decedent without a family decision.
  • Move long holds to a refrigerated storage partner by contract.
  • For a system with several hospitals, use spare capacity at another site.

What to require from a storage partner

  • A separate identification record and an assigned position for each decedent.
  • Temperature monitoring and records.
  • Recorded access to the storage area.
  • Release only on the hospital's authorization or to the party with legal authority.
  • A release record with the receiving party, date, time and signature.
